Old Time Podcasters, The Playstation Show, and the evolving Vita Voices.

Back in 2006 I started another podcast, The Playstation Show, which would be a short weekly podcast on the Sony Playstation Portable. It slowed down a bit in 2011, but never really went away. With the PS Vita on the way, I decided in January that it needed to be brought “up to the boil” for the year (and in the process helping me keep abreast of the portable gaming world - all the more important as it becomes an interesting battleground in the smartphone world).

The show got a little bit of a rethink, moving away from a news-bulletin style to something a bit more like an op-ed from an old style radio or news correspondent (in the style of  Alistair Cooke or Andy Rooney). It went down well with the audience, traffic started to rise… and then it got even more exciting.

I’m an old-time podcaster, and there is a bit of a bond between those early ‘casters, even if many have moved on to bigger and better things (or Eurovision). Jason Evangelho, née Insomnia Radio, is now behind Video Game Writers, and the site is building up into a great source of news and opinion. And he had a listen to the podcasts.

…a little bit of time passes…

I’m really happy to announce that as the PSP hands the baton to the PS Vita, and The Playstation Show gets renamed to Vita Voices, the podcast will now be a co-production between The Podcast Corner and Video Game Writers. It gives the podcast a lot more exposure and listeners, while VGW get more great and unique content as they grow. Which is a win all round in my book.

And the first of the new shows? It’s here…

When and where to use podcasts in your blogging

Some thoughts over on the Blog World blog on using podcasts in your blogging. Should you run just a single show, or consider running it as part of a content strategy:

In many circumstances, people are looking to explore the podcasting space, to find out how it all works, to see how they get on with it, and have a bit of fun. There’s nothing wrong with that – one of my popular podcasts started as a few shows on my personal blog and it eventually became too big for me to not notice the traffic and “spin it out” to its own site.

But for a long time that show was just a hobby, with it’s own little corner of my website. And while I have long running shows that are nothing more than a weekly podcast posted on a basic blog, that’s a great place to start and learn the ropes. But if anyone is looking to start up a podcast with a serious goal in mind to be noticed and get coverage, I always come back to the same piece of advice.

A podcast will rarely stand alone.

It’s not the cancellation of a podcast, it’s the 301 settlement that counts

The question in my mind isn’t what happens to the 2012 episodes of The Bugle now that The Times have cancelled the show, but what happens to everyone subscribed to the RSS feed? Will The Times do the honorable thing and put a 301 redirect on the feed to wherever The Bugle ends up, or will Andy and John be starting from [subscribers = 0] in 2012?

When you need a SIM, go local

Local SIM or Roaming/International SIM while travelling?

One of these options is going to be for “a real emergency” while another will allow me to stay connected, to reply to Twitter messages, to keep up to data on Facebook, post to my blog, moderate comments…and let me upload my podcasts.

More of my thoughts on the BlogWorld Blog.

Junior Eurovision 2011 and the first Juke Box Jury round

There’s another Eurovision Song Contest around the corner (Junior Eurovision will be on Dec 3rd, and broadcast from Yerevan, Armenia). Leading up to the contest, the traditional preview shows on the Eurovision podcast will be running, but this time the regular guests on Juke Box Jury have been stood down. It’s Junior Eurovision, so that means Junior Juke Box Jury and the kids from Duncan Place deciding on a Hit, Miss, or Maybe.

Round 1 has the songs from hosts Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belgium.

As always, more fun and games at ESC Insight, along with a bundle of coverage on JESC (as the abbreviation goes)

All About Windows Phone’s Insight Podcast

We were always going to have an Insight Podcast for AAWP, and while there was the introductory one in October, and two specials from NokiaWorld, this week’s ‘cast is probably the first “true” Windows Phone podcast from the All About team.

Podcasters ask “Are you listening? Are you going to reply?”

“Lies, damn lies, and statistics.” To the old cliché it might be worth adding “number of internet downloads” because working out just how many people are consuming your content is the source of countless applications, rules of thumb, and the occasional touch of snake oil (yes, I still get pitched with measured “hits” in 2011).  It gets even more interesting with podcasting…

So how do you work out who’s listening and engaging with your podcast? Some of my suggestions are up on the BlogWorld Blog.
